INTEGRATING THE ELIMINATION OF RACIAL PREJUDICE WITH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT WORK: A NEW PILOT PROGRAM
Creating coherence and building capacity
Since August 2018, the Race Story ReWrite team has been working in collaboration with a national faith-based organization to explore how they address issues of race within their community building activities. During the initial phase of the project, our team will be facilitating workshops and follow-up sessions with groups in several cities over an extended period of time. We will accompany community members as they engage in a systematic, focused process of action, evaluation, consultation, and learning. This new learning will be documented throughout the course of the project and the findings shared with other communities around the country.
Our team is growing and building capacity along with the project
In order to carry out the work required to meet the goals of this new project, we have welcomed two new members to our team. Michelle Schiefelbein is heading up the documenting process and Danita Hardin is assisting with facilitation. Both are contributing their expertise in community building and race studies. The whole team is stretching and acquiring new skills, and we are grateful for this opportunity to learn together with the people we're serving.
Art is the language of the Unknown
An integral element of the pilot project is the use of art as an alternative way of learning the concepts presented in the workshops. Co-founder Gene Unterschuetz brings his artistic skills and knowledge to his role as Director of Arts Programming and Education. He leads participants through exercises designed to help them practice the skills that are foundational to community development and social justice work.
